The most under-used resource in American small business

There are experts who will advise you for free. Most owners never find out.

The federal government funds a national network of business advisers who will sit down with you, repeatedly, at no charge — and there are roughly a thousand of these centres. Meanwhile people pay consultants thousands for the same conversation.

What people pay for that is already free

None of these are scams. They are just services sold to people who did not know there was a free equivalent.

Business plan consultant

$500 – $5,000

Free equivalent: An SBDC adviser will work through your plan and financial projections with you, repeatedly, at no charge.

Loan packaging service

1 – 5% of the loan

Free equivalent: SBDCs help prepare SBA loan applications free, and often know which local lenders actually approve businesses like yours.

Business coach or mentor

$100 – $500/hour

Free equivalent: SCORE mentoring is free and ongoing, and many mentors have run businesses in your sector.

Grant-finding service

$100 – $1,000

Free equivalent: Grants.gov is free and searchable. Be sceptical of anyone charging to find you 'free government money' for a normal small business — most federal grants do not go to for-profit start-ups.

Who they are and what each is good for

Small Business Development Centers

Free counselling. Training workshops are sometimes low-cost.

Roughly a thousand centres nationwide, usually hosted by universities, offering free one-to-one business counselling funded by the SBA and state partners.

Best for: Business plans, financial projections, loan applications, and working out whether an idea holds together before you spend money on it. Advisers often have direct relationships with local lenders.

The most substantive of the free options. Counselling is ongoing rather than one-off, so you can keep going back to the same adviser.

SCORE

Free mentoring, indefinitely.

A volunteer network of working and retired executives who mentor small business owners, in person and remotely, at no charge.

Best for: Getting a second opinion from someone who has actually run a business in your industry, and for founders who mainly need a sounding board.

Quality varies with the individual mentor. If the first match is not useful, ask for a different one — that is normal and expected.

Community Development Financial Institutions

Advice is typically free. Loans carry normal interest.

Mission-driven lenders that serve businesses conventional banks decline, often with technical assistance alongside the loan.

Best for: Getting financed when a bank has said no, particularly in underbanked communities. They generally look at the whole picture rather than just a credit score.

Not a grant source. But frequently a far better option than the merchant cash advances that target businesses turned down by banks.

Common questions

Is SBDC counselling really free?

Yes. Small Business Development Center counselling is free to the business owner, funded by the Small Business Administration together with state and university partners. There is no catch and no upsell — advisers are not selling you anything. Some training workshops carry a small fee, but one-to-one counselling does not.

What is the difference between SCORE and an SBDC?

SCORE is a volunteer mentor network — working and retired executives who advise on an ongoing basis, and it works best when you are matched with someone from your industry. SBDCs are professionally staffed centres, usually university-hosted, and tend to be stronger on financial projections, loan applications and formal business planning. Many owners use both.

Can an SBDC help me get an SBA loan?

Yes, and this is one of the most valuable things they do. SBDC advisers help prepare loan applications at no charge and often know which local lenders actually approve businesses of your type and size. Loan packaging services charge 1 to 5 percent of the loan for similar work.

Are there free grants for starting a small business?

Mostly no, and this is where people get taken advantage of. Federal grants generally go to research, non-profits and specific policy priorities rather than ordinary for-profit start-ups. Grants.gov is free to search. Be very sceptical of anyone charging a fee to find you free government money.
